Sam is 1 of 3 Women in the history of Triathlon who have won ITU World Cup Races and an Ironman. The other two athletes being Michellie Jones and Karen Smyers.

Before the ITU WCS the pinnacle of the sport was The ITU Triathlon World Cup. Athletes competed year round to be crowned World Cup Champion - essentially the same as the current WCS except there were more races per year. In 2008 Sam won the ITU World Cup at the age of 37.
